About the 1876 Webb-Hay House

The History

This beautiful house began in 1820 as a brick kitchen with an open hearth attached to a wood frame house. The original wood frame portion of the house was moved to a new location a few blocks away, and in 1876 the brick house that you now see was constructed onto the front of the old kitchen.

The first owner, Franklin E. Hay (1831-1895), was an early mayor of Carmi, a banker, a politician, and the son of Daniel Hay, one of the first pioneers of our town. He is buried, along with his wife, Martha Lane (Webb) Hay (1831-1925) in the Old Carmi Cemetery that you can see just south of the house.

We truly hope that you appreciate this grand old Italiante style house and enjoy your stay!

The House

The 1st Floor

The ground level has one fully furnished bedroom, with a private bathroom, that is more accessible for those that have trouble getting up staircases.  This bathroom has a “claw-foot tub” that is original to the house. This floor also has two parlors at the front of the house, a dining room and the kitchen.

The 2nd Floor

Going up the first set of stairs leads to three bedrooms each with their own private bathroom and each are beautifully accommodated. The rooms are large, with high ceilings and floor-to-ceiling windows that view upon the surrounding neighborhood.  A fourth room is currently being renovated.

The 3rd Floor

The top floor of the house has been refurbished into a grand events center with a bar that is available for special parties and private events. The wide-open space can accommodate several tables for either dinner parties or seating for any event. The beautiful wood-accented room does require going up a couple of long staircases that are original to the house.

The Cellar

Home of the 1876 Webb-Hay “Tavern.”  This small, quaint, gathering place is the perfect place to have an afternoon of visiting with friends, watching sports on television, an evening of fun, or a nightcap if you are a guest of the house. A rotating menu of pub-style food will be offered on differing days in the tavern, and a menu of lunch and dinner items will be coming in the near future. The cellar also hosts a separate gaming room for those interested in video slots.

The Patio

Just outside of the cellar bar sits the perfect spot for enjoying a summer evening or a fall afternoon with your favorite beverage. The lighted patio is furnished with tables, chairs, and umbrellas for your own small gathering spot.
